About BU
Boston University was founded on the ideals that it would be one of the first all-inclusive universities, as well as a leading private research and teaching institution. Boston University celebrates its diversity by carrying the exclusive title of being the first university to open all its divisions to female students in 1872, the first coeducational medical college in the world in 1873, and proudly lists Martin Luther King, Jr. among distinguished alumni. BU also showcases the first woman to earn a Ph.D., the first woman admitted to the bar in Massachusetts, the first Native American graduate with a doctorate in medicine, and the first African-American psychiatrist in the nation.
With more than 32,000 students from 140 countries worldwide, Boston University is the fourth largest private university in the United States and was recently ranked by Times Higher Education as one of the top 50 universities in the world. Established in 1869, Boston University is regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, (NEASC) Inc.
